Meet the Founders: Catherine & Sneha
My lifelong passion is to empower womankind. This pursuit has led me to sit with fellow females in the villages of Peru to the slums of India to the coffee farms of Kenya, as an NGO economist in my 20s and a documentary director-producer in my 30s.
Having made East Africa my home, I’ve filmed under its powerful sun while speeding on bodas, standing on precarious rowboats in hippo-filled lakes, and everything in between. By the time my co-founder Sneha and I met, my skin was admittedly in its most worn state of my life.
Then I witnessed the strangest thing. On a flight from a film shoot, a UN peacekeeping soldier sitting in front of me — coincidentally a fellow Korean — put a SHEET MASK on his face. That’s right, a soldier had his mind on his facial skin health on the day he was discharged.
I realized that I held something powerful in my grasp: the ability to build a bridge to bring healthy, effective, affordable, and fun skincare from my original home of Korea, to my chosen home in Kenya. Beyond bringing products for friends who ask for them whenever I visit Seoul… to develop a brand new skincare line for OUR climate, OUR environment, and OUR lifestyle right here in Kenya.
Thus I bring you Uncover with deep passion and commitment to the self-care of my fellow womankind, who desire and deserve better choices and better information when it comes to caring for what we put forward the most, our faces.
I was always the “finance” girl having spent over a decade of my life in banking and private equity. It wasn’t until I met Catherine that I realised that I had deep-rooted personal experiences in skincare and I found myself sharing with her a passion to ensure women always feel comfortable in her “skin”…
Skincare has never been easy for me and it has always been a stress point in my life. As a teenager, I was, of course, not unique in skin trouble – but when it truly began to act up in my late 20s, I found myself with stress – and hormone-driven acne all over my face.
I grew self-conscious and I went to a dermatologist in Nairobi for help. The dermatologist encouraged me to use harsh ingredients and treatments for a ‘quick fix’ – I wanted to do anything to make it better and I naively followed.
The treatments and medicines ended up burning my face to a state that still gives me shivers when I think about it today. I hit my lowest-ever point in self-confidence.
I slowly healed, both physically and emotionally – and with a resounding belief that gentle, natural, and effective products are the healthiest solution for any skin. I want to translate this passion into action and close the glaring gap in the skincare market on the continent. I hope no woman ever has to lose her confidence because of her skin. So here I am with Uncover – something I am truly passionate about – to make sure that every woman knows that skincare is a journey (as it still is for me), YOU are beautiful the way you are and access to good quality, safe products is essential to healthy skin.
